Week 3 - Mixed Media

This week we used different ways of printing, or taping to create images.  I chose to do lino-cutting and the masking tape covering.
Reflection:  I really enjoyed the lino-cutting and was proud of my final print.  My masking-tape covering up piece I wasn’t as happy with.  I was rushed because I really wanted to do both activities, but should have probably chosen just one.  Still, in a primary classroom I think the lino-cutting isn’t a very realistic activity to do, so I would be much more inclined to do the masking take art.  Also, I was just not happy with my end product, but I still really like the process and the activity.
Adaptations:  I would likely chose to do the Styrofoam plate carvings with a primary class.  I think they would come up with some really great prints.  I would also do as we did in providing inspiration for students.  I think that is a really important scaffolding tool to do for beginning art students.  By providing students with inspiration you facilitate them being able to create something.  As children learners it makes sense they wouldn’t have a huge depth of prior knowledge from which to draw inspiration.  As an educator this is a time to begin building that depth or prior knowledge for the students.  I would not change much for the masking tape activity.  This would be a fun activity to revisit on a few occasions and allow students to add to it over the course of a few classes/weeks.  It would be fun to see the work evolve over the course of a few weeks.  I would like to be able to document the students pieces and chart the change/development.

Assessment:  For the masking tape piece I would likely be inclined to asses their use of colour.  Did they create something that seemed unified and to make sense?  Or did they seem confused how to mix/match colours?  Did they understand the concept of layering?  Did they create one or more layers?
For the Styrafoam piece I would assess their ability to understand how to carve the drawing within the foam.  Did they understand to some degree the use of negative space?  Did they use inspiration from around the room?  Did their image turn out?
